It was so nice to come home to the finished flooring, which has transformed the feel of my home. Everyone we worked with at each stage of the project has been very welcoming, responsive, and easy to work with. The team did a great job fitting the flooring within the narrow specs we had to work within the kitchen.

How often should I clean my wooden floors?

Wooden floors are undeniably beautiful and elegant, but one thing that sometimes puts homeowners off them is the perception that they require a lot of maintenance, or that they are easily damaged and worn. The truth lies somewhere in the middle; they’re actually quite easy to keep in good condition if you know what you’re doing, but they do require a little work week on week. Follow our handy guide to figure out what you need to do to keep your wooden floors in top condition, and when.

Frequent

On a daily basis, the only thing you should be doing to your floors is giving them a quick dust or mop to get rid of surface grime and loose grit. This needn’t take more than a minute or two per room. You should also vacuum your floors weekly, being careful to use the ‘bare floor’ setting on your vacuum cleaner. This is all you really need to do to keep your floors healthy on a daily or weekly basis.

Monthly

Less regularly, you should try to clean your floor with a suitable wood floor cleaner – the best cleaner to use will depend on the type of wooden floor you have, so make sure you’re using the correct one. Don’t be tempted to do this too often or too vigorously, either – your floors could actually be damaged by over-cleaning, so once a month is plenty.

Less often

Every 3-5 years or so, it’s a good idea to get your floors re-coated with a maintenance coat of varnish. Most floors, especially those that don’t see heavy footfall day in day out, can comfortably wait to the upper end of this bracket.

Rarely

Finally, you may want to get your floors re-sanded, but definitely not too much. We actually find, more often than not, that people think that sanding wooden floors should be done much more regularly than is true. This can actually damage wooden flooring. Most wooden floors will only need to be sanded every 20-30 years, so you needn’t worry about that being a recurring job!

As you can see, wooden floors do require extra care, but it isn’t half as much as many people think. With only a little extra TLC, you can keep your wooden floors looking fresh and new for decades.
